The essence of Chinese culture bridges ‘East and West,’ while new sounds resonate through ancient and modern times. Foreign teachers immerse themselves in traditional cultural activities.
Recently, the ‘Essence and New Sounds of Chinese Culture’ traditional arts workshop was held as scheduled. Fifteen foreign teachers from the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Spain, and other countries stepped out of the classroom to join students and faculty in experiencing calligraphy, Chinese painting, paper-cutting, Peking Opera face painting, and tie-dyeing. Through immersive engagement, they felt the unique charm of China's outstanding traditional culture, composing a harmonious melody of cross-cultural exchange.
Multiple cultural experience zones were set up at the event site, with student volunteers possessing relevant professional backgrounds assigned to guide participants in each area.
In the calligraphy experience area, foreign teachers carefully traced Chinese characters like ‘Guang’ and ‘Zhou’ with brushes on rice paper. Young translators from the cultural exchange association patiently explained the meanings behind the characters in English. Beyond merely imitating the strokes, the activity represented an exploration of the essence of Chinese culture.
In the Chinese Brush Painting experience area, young artists from the art school patiently demonstrated to the foreign teachers how to sketch, outline, and apply color. During this time, David, a teacher from Spain, attempted to paint bamboo. With the students' assistance, the foreign teacher steadied the brush for the first time, carefully outlining the contours and details of the subject. In that moment, the bamboo became not only an art form but a bridge connecting hearts.
The paper-cutting experience area was also bustling. Red paper and scissors fluttered in the hands of teachers and students. In the blink of an eye, lifelike window decorations and auspicious ‘Fu’ characters sprang to life on the paper. Murakami from Japan was fascinated by the art of paper-cutting. With the help of student volunteers, he attempted to cut out a simple ‘Fu’ character pattern. He said, ‘It seems like simple folding and cutting, yet it creates such exquisite works and it's truly amazing.’ Each vibrant paper-cut piece became a testament to the creative collision of cultures.
Our college consistently prioritizes the inheritance and promotion of China's outstanding traditional culture while striving to build cross-cultural exchange platforms. Inviting foreign teachers to participate in this traditional cultural experience not only allowed them to intimately appreciate the profound depth of Chinese culture, enhancing their understanding and connection with China, but also provided diverse cultural exchange opportunities for both teachers and students. This initiative fostered respect cultural diversity among everyone involved.
